Your first visit

One of the most important aspects about having orthodontic work is getting the right treatment for your teeth. Here at Anglia Orthodontics we ensure your treatment is unique to your needs.

A detailed treatment plan

On your first visit to us here at Anglia Orthodontics, we’ll create a detailed treatment plan designed specifically for you. This involves examining your face, mouth and teeth, as well as taking moulds, photographs and any necessary x-rays. We do this to make sure we come up with the best possible treatment that will help you achieve a winning smile. No actual treatment is carried out on your first visit, but we will take the time to talk through our proposed treatment plan with you to make sure you understand exactly what the process will be and that you’re happy with it.

Your next visit will depend on whether you have chosen Invisalign or fixed braces.

Invisalign: At your next appointment we will take further records including the special moulds which are sent away to the laboratory to make your individualised treatment plan movies. This appointment usually takes up to an hour.

At the following appointment we will show you your individualised movies and order your aligners. This is a short 30 minute appointment. At each of your appointments you are able to ask as many questions as you wish. There are two more appointments: one to fit your aligners (20  minutes), during which your orthodontist will explain the care required for your aligners; and one to fit any attachments (45 minutes) if necessary.

Fixed braces: At this appointment your teeth are gently cleaned before the braces are fixed to your teeth using the latest adhesive available. This process is completely safe and will not damage or mark your teeth. The archwire is then placed into the brackets. No drilling or injections are involved in this process and the appointment should take between 30 and 60 minutes. We will then give you a comprehensive aftercare guide so you know exactly how to look after and care for your new braces.

Treatment length

The length of time orthodontic treatment takes depends on the method chosen and the severity of the case. On average, treatment usually takes between 12 to 18 months to complete; however, some complicated cases may require slightly longer to produce the best results. Your orthodontist will inform you about the treatment period on your first visit.

Cooperation from you, the patient, and parents for children’s orthodontic treatment, is vital for a successful outcome. You will need to follow the aftercare guidelines, look after your teeth as instructed and continue to see your general dentist.

Retention - Removable & fixed retainers

We love seeing our patients after they’ve completed a course of orthodontic treatment, but that doesn’t mean our work is done. We want to ensure your new smile lasts a lifetime but sometimes teeth will still move after you’ve stopped wearing braces. That is why we recommend using a retainer at the end of your treatment.

  • Removable retainers are like a very thin rugby player’s mouth guard which we recommend you wear in bed at night;
  • Fixed retainers are a fine wire glued to the inside of your teeth which we’ll leave there for an extended period of time.

All our patients receive removable aligners. Our private patients, if suitable, will also receive the fixed retainer. It’s important to remember, these are a vital part of your orthodontic treatment. If you’d like more information about retainers, ask your orthodontist at your next visit.
