Please read the following instructions carefully.
If you would like to ask a specific question please enter your question below:
| Wearing a removable brace |
|
Getting used to your brace
It will take a few days for you to get used to your new brace,
you may find it makes you salivate or it may effect the way
you speak. Do not worry these things soon get back to normal
Wearing your brace
It must be worn at all times even when you are asleep. The
more you wear your brace the quicker your treatment will
be. The brace may be taken out during sports and swimming
- BUT it must be kept safe in a box and put back in your
mouth as soon as possible.
Cleaning your brace
Keep your teeth and brace clean by:
- Brushing your teeth and brace after every meal
- Rinse your brace to remove food if you cannot brush your teeth.
- Taking your brace out
- Always pull on the clips around your back teeth
A broken brace
If your brace breaks then continue to wear it if at all possible
and contact us as soon as possible.

What to expect
During the first few days your teeth may become tender as
the start to move, if you find this uncomfortable then take
pain killers that you would normally take if you had a headache.
If your teeth become increasingly painful at any time during
your treatment then contact us for further advice.
Foods to avoid
You are wearing a fixed brace which is glued to your teeth
- if you eat anything hard or chewy then you might damage
your brace and this may mean that your treatment takes longer.
Avoid toffees, chewing gum, French sticks, hard crunchy foods
etc.
If you like eating apples then cut them up and eat on your
back teeth.
Cleaning your brace
It is important that you keep your fixed brace clean. If
you allow food and plaque to build up around your teeth and
brace you might end up damaging you teeth causing permanent
marks or even tooth decay.
Brush your teeth after meals
Use a fluoride mouthwash last thing at night to help protect
and strengthen your teeth.
Broken braces
A broken brace will not straighten your teeth and will prolong treatment. If this happens then contact us for a sooner appointment.
